Rの統合環境であるRStudioの使い方を演習によってひとりで学ぶためのテキスト。統計学のことは概略知っていることが前提になっている。「データフレーム」とか、χ2分割表、t検定、ANOVAあたりの用語にびっくりしない程度なら大丈夫。語り口はやわらかく、主義がふらつかず、ストレートフォワードなので、学びやすい。
全部は語らず、読者自身がヘルプを調べたりググったりする「アクティブラーニング」も期待して書かれている。自分で調べる習慣をつけるにもよい。
従来のRのテキストと異なるのは、dplyr、ggplot2が主に使われていること。RStudio社の主任研究員のHadley Wickham氏が作成したRパッケージ群の一部で、データの扱い方が統一的に設計し直されている。dplyrはデータの整理・分類・変換などの処理のためのパッケージで、面倒な処理を直感的に記述できる。また、Unixのようなパイプライン処理が可能になる。ggplot2はグラフを描くためのパッケージで、いろいろな形式のグラフを美しく描ける。
