進化の過程でしばしば遺伝子の重複が起き、それが生物の進化を加速させた。100年以上まえからの仮説だったが、多くの種の全ゲノム配列がわかった今日、過去の遺伝子重複の痕跡をゲノム上に多く見いだすことができる。ゲノム研究（一例）の基盤をなす理論だ。
この仮説を理論として広く知らしめたのは、大野 乾氏の1970年の英文の著書『Evolution by Gene Duplication』だ。その後和訳されたのが、『遺伝子重複による進化』（1977年）である。
原著、邦訳とも久しく絶版になっていたが、2015年になっていずれも再刊された。もとの紙面をスキャンして版下にしている。岩波書店は、絶版になった名著をオンデマンド方式で再刊している。受注生産なので注文から入手までに数週間要するが、Amazonに在庫がある。
